Edale farm fall leaves worker blind in one eye
Two men have been fined after a worker suffered head injuries and was left blind in one eye when he plunged nearly five metres through a fragile barn roof in Edale.
The 31-year-old from Wirksworth was helping carry out repairs to the roof when one of the corrugated cement roof panels gave way at Lady Booth Hall Farm, Ollerbrook Lane, on July 9, 2012.
He fell to the concrete floor of the barn and was airlifted to hospital after sustaining multiple fractures to his skull. He was left with permanent loss of sight in his right eye and hearing in his left ear.
At High Peak Magistrates’ Court last week, Craig Allsop, 37, of Old Hill, Ashbourne, who was in charge of the work, was fined £3,000 and ordered to pay £800 costs after admitting a breach of the Work and Height Regulations 2005.
Farm owner John Shirt, 62, admitted a breach of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 by failing to do more to ensure the safety of the people he had contracted to repair the roof. He was fined £2,500 and ordered to pay costs of £800.
The case was brought by the Health and Safety Executive.
