The Duke of Devonshire has formally opened the new drill hall for Buxton Sea Cadets.

The event took place during an annual inspection at the cadets’ base, in Silverlands, Buxton.

It has taken ten years for the new facility to come to fruition and the Duke congratulated the unit on a job well done.

A campaign to raise the funds needed to build the hall was launched by committee member Trevor Johnson, Chairman of the Buxton and High Peak Royal Naval Association, in 2010.

The unit gave its thanks to all the local firms, charitable organisations and individuals who have contributed to the building fund, as well as all those who supported it in the NatWest Community Force Award competition, in which it won a first prize of £6,275.

At the end of the evening a presentation was made by Laura Hallam of an award in memory of her father, Leslie Hallam, who served on HMS Bulwark RO8. The award is presented annually to a cadet who made a special contribution to the unit during the year and this year it was P.O.Cadet James Halsey.

The unit has received the Inspecting Officer’s Report in which he congratulated everyone involved on the high standard of the parade and on the enthusiasm of the cadets. A Burgee has been awarded for the sixth year in succession. The unit is encouraged to continue with its programme for upgrading the toilet and galley facilities, for installing a telephone line and for expanding training facilities to give the cadets wider experience.
