Double disaster for Whaley Bridge churches
RESIDENTS of Whaley Bridge are being asked to respond to a double SOS call after it emerged the two Anglican churches – Holy Trinity and St James's, Taxal –face a cash crisis that could run into tens of thousands of pounds.
Holy Trinity has suffered a failure of its heating system, limiting its use for regular services as well as other community activities and meetings.
Meanwhile St James's – a very pretty and historical church– needs urgent structural repairs to support butresses.
Church officials fear the heating problems in Holy Trinity will eventually damage the decoration and structure of the building, and jeopardise the organ.
Local people are being asked to give their support by donating to an appeal fund for both churches.
Holy Trinity will hold a Gift Day on Saturday 11 July, when people can contribute cash in special envelopes.
There is also an appeal for small items for a fund-raising auction, specifically for the heating problem. They can be left at the church Gift Day, or phone appeal organiser Sue Mellor on 01663 732005 for items to be collected.
Goods will be sold by Marshalls at Knutsford at an auction in August.
You can also contact either churchwarden, Pam Booth on 01663 742595 or Maureen Roberts 01663 733417.
