DERBYSHIRE: New wave of apprenticeships up for grabs

A new recruitment round is beginning as part of Derbyshire County Council’s ongoing drive to create 500 apprenticeship places by 2016.

The authority has created more than 100 apprenticeships since the initiative was launched at the beginning of last year.

Delivered in partnership with Learning Unlimited, the new placements will be advertised at two recruitment events which are being hosted to coincide with National Apprenticeship Week (March 11 to 15).

Careers opportunities for the new apprenticeship places include:

• Business Administration (Matlock)

• Audit (Matlock)

• Highways Laboratory Technician (Ambergate)

• Recycling Promotions (Darley Dale)

• Countryside Warden (Tapton Lock/Clay Cross)

• Civil Engineering (Matlock)

Further details will be available at recruitment events being hosted at Chesterfield College on March 14 between 4.30pm and 7.30pm and at County Hall, Matlock, on March 15 between 4pm and 7pm.

Business Administration apprentice Chloe Moore, who was recruited in the last wave of placements, said: “I applied for the apprenticeship as I wanted to gain a qualification in Business Administration as well as being in a working environment.

“Throughout the period of time with Derbyshire County Council I have gained experience and knowledge and this has led to me getting a permanent position with them.”

Those sentiments were echoed by apprentice Charlotte Haslam, 22, who has now completed her NVQ Level 3 Apprenticeship in Business Administration and gone on to secure a permanent position as a Business Services Assistant.

Charlotte said: “Learning skills while actually being in a relevant, working position has really agreed with me.

“I wanted a career I could progress in and my A level and now my apprenticeship has certainly given me that.”

Councillor Kevin Parkinson, Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “We’re here to improve life for local people and these placements give hard-working young people of all backgrounds and learning and physical abilities a great start to their career by helping them to gain skills.

“It benefits the local area and businesses too as we’re helping create skilled and valuable employees in Derbyshire.

“We’re looking forward to filling these places – and more will be offered later this year – so anyone interested should find out more about the exciting opportunities on offer.”
