Deadline looms for Glossop restoration grant bids

OWNERS of historic commercial buildings in Glossop town centre have been urged to find out about a restoration grant scheme – while there is still time.

The alert was sounded this week by High Peak Borough Council, which warned that projects funded by the Glossopdale Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) would have to be complete by the end of next March.

One of the aims of the THI has been to encourage the repair and restoration of traditional shop fronts by helping fund reinstatement of historical detail including joinery and stonework.

Godfrey Claff, executive councillor for regeneration, said: “The preservation and restoration of traditional buildings is not only important for aesthetic reasons, it also makes town centres more attractive to shoppers, visitors and inward investors.

“That’s why we’re urging eligible owners who have yet to benefit from the THI to apply before it’s too late,” he explained.

To date, 12 properties have benefited from grants – with several other schemes in the pipeline.

Recent projects have included facelifts for High Street Dental Clinic and Hollywood Nails, both in High Street West. Traditional shop fronts were reinstated at both properties while the dental clinic was also enhanced with replacement cast iron gutters and drainpipes. .

Owners and occupiers of traditional buildings are eligible to apply for grants of up to 75 per cent of the cost of specialist repair and reinstatement of architectural and historical features.

Administered and part funded by the borough council, the THI is also funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Derbyshire County Council.
