Curb spending, councils urged

PARISHES and town councils have been warned to curb any increase in their annual precept to reflect the increase in funding they will receive from High Peak Borough Council.

High Peak Borough Council leader Tony Ashton, speaking at Hayfield Parish Council meeting said: "You will be shortly setting your budget for the next year.

"Can I remind members that the increase in grant for 2009/2010 for the parish council from the borough council is an increase that equates to 5.6 per cent of your total budget in 2008/2009."

He said it meant spending could be increased by 5.6 per cent in Hayfield before members would need to increase the parish precept.

"The parish grants committee said three years ago that they would be looking shortly at what has happened in the intervening years," said Cllr Ashton.

He said the aim of the parish grant was to alleviate the 'double rating' on householders but said the main three councils in the High Peak that were to benefit from it had increased their budgets by a higher percentage than the borough council itself.

Cllr Ashton revealed that the Borough Council precept increase was expected to be as modest as it was last year.
