WHALEY Bridge’s annual fireworks display has been saved after a group of volunteers agreed to take it on and secured financial backing from Whaley Bridge Town Council.

An SOS was issued in the council newsletter earlier in the year after the Round Table, who organised the event for many years, said they could no longer continue to run it.

Resident Lor Cole read the SOS and offered to help, with other volunteers coming forward. They then formed a group keen to keep the fireworks going.

A business plan was presented to the council and councillors agreed to underwrite the event, which in the past has attracted over 800 spectators.

Lor, chairman of the group, said: “We are committed to keeping the fireworks display going.

“We want to make a wonderful display that will please families, and to make sure the event goes on into the future.”

It will be based at Whaley Bridge Bowling Club on Friday November 2. The fireworks will be set off by professionals from the adjacent playing field at the primary school. A tall hedge will keep spectators well clear of the fireworks.

Lor said: “Safety is our priority, alongside providing a spectacular evening.”

The group has already decided on the admission cost - £3 for adults and £1 for children.

Advance tickets will be on sale at the bowling club, the Mechanics’ Institute, other outlets and through a door to door campaign by group members and volunteers.

There will be Christmas market-style stalls, including Whaley burgers which were successfully launched at the Whaley Bridge Water Weekend.

Volunteers, or people who want to help in any way, can contact Lor on 07724 103964.
