COLUMN: Swearing makes me curse

If you say to me you've never uttered a swear word in your life, I wouldn't believe you.

We’ve all sworn in our lifetime, some more than others.

In fact, come into our newsroom on any one of our deadlines and you’ll hear the air turn blue at times.

I’m as guilty as anyone when it comes to expletive deletives in the office.

There’s no excuse, but it just happens in the heat of the moment – of which there can be many, believe me!

I’m even prone to using bad language behind the wheel of my car – obviously not in front of my 10-year-old son. Honest!

But what I can’t stand is walking down the street and hearing people talking out loud “effing and jeffing” without a care in the world – and in front of children, sometimes their own.

I’m no prude, but I really don’t like it – in fact I can’t stand it.

Seriously, when did it become the norm – and even socially acceptable – for people to do this in public?

Why do people feel it necessary?

Are you seriously telling me they’d struggle to hold a conversation with someone else without using such language? If so, it’s a shocking indictment of how low our standards of communication have really fallen.

You have to despair, don’t you? You really have to question how these people have been brought up?

It really isn’t nice to hear in public and doesn’t make people sound hip and trendy – quite the opposite, in fact.

So, if you want to swear please don’t do it in public.

It’s just not cool - in fact, it’s just bang out of order!
