FUEL POVERTY affects more than a quarter of households in the High Peak, new figures show.

Statistics from the Cheaper Energy Together Community Partnership show that fuel poverty affects around 19 per cent of households in Derbyshire, compared to the national average of just over 16 per cent.

In the High Peak, fuel poverty affects around 17.8 per cent of households.

The Cheaper Energy Together Community Partnership is a group of 30 organisations including charities, local authorities and housing associations, which is helping to bring cheaper energy to UK households through an initiative funded by the Department for Energy and Climate Change.

Led by the not-for-profit organisation the People’s Power, the partnership provides an instant energy switching service to get households a better deal, and will also offer free energy saving advice and support.

Kris Ambler, Partnership Manager at Advice Derbyshire, said: “We are excited to be involved in such a strong community partnership for cheaper energy bills.”

• Derbyshire cancer patients ended the year struggling to cope with their fuel bills and had to rely on grants given out by Macmillan Cancer Support.

The charity saw a dramatic rise in requests for grants in the last week of 2012, and paid out £2,890 - 33 per cent higher than the weekly average for 2012.

Eighty per cent of the people helped were given grants towards heating bills.
