Chapel couple’s diamond day

John And Myra Hearnshaw

John And Myra Hearnshaw

Chapel-en-le-Frith couple John and Myra Hearnshaw are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary today (Thursday).

The couple, who live at Blackbrook Farm, met in Baslow, where they were both working, Myra as a nursery nurse and John in the farming trade.

The couple married on February 28 1953 at Baslow Methodist Church, moving to the High Peak shortly after.

They went on to have four children, Alison, Judith, Nicholas and Mary and now also have three grandchildren, Jane, Russell and Emily.

John spent all his working life in the farming trade, while the couple also ran a milk round in Whaley Bridge for 29 years.

And both John and Myra are very active in the community, being involved in Chapel-en-le-Frith Methodist Church, the U3A and Chapel Gardening Group.

Myra is also a founder member of Sparrowpit WI.

Explaining the secret to their long and happy marriage, John, 86, said: “We look after each other.

“And you’ve got to take the rough with the smooth.”

Myra, 83, added: “You’ve got to keep your head down when things get rough and not give up at the first hurdle.”

The couple will celebrate the milestone with a family gathering on Saturday.
