Cash boost for May Queen event
THE 2008 Hayfield May Queen Kayleigh Wild was delighted to accept £300 on behalf of the May Queen Committee from County Councillor Beth Atkins.
The funding from her share of Derbyshire County Council's Community Leadership Fund will be used to help pay for a new marquee.
May Queen Secretary Barbara Ramwell said that the marquee would be used in all weathers for the visiting royalty. "It will come in really handy especially with the weather - you never know if it will be rain or shine."
* Organisers are calling on the community to help with the event, either as marshalls on the day, helping to set up the day before or as members of the committee.
Secretary Barbara Ramwell said: "We are short of volunteers, particularly male volunteers. If anyone would like to come forward to help put bunting up the week before the event and taking it down again or who could help on Friday, May 8 or on May Queen Day itself setting up we would love to hear from them."
The committee are also hoping to recruit more people to give an hour of their time to act as a marshall on the day.
Barbara and the rest of the team who put on the popular village event each year are looking to increase the members of the committee and would welcome new ideas.
"We could do with some younger people so it will continue into the future," explained Barbara.
