Carbon neutral idea for village

THE COMPANY behind plans for a major redevelopment in Bradwell have hailed the success of last weekend's consultation event.

Around 300 residents took the opportunity to find out more about the proposals by Newburgh Estates to transform their 15-acre Newburgh Engineering site at Netherside.

Representatives from Newburgh and Sheffield architectural firm Bond Bryan, who have designed the development, were on hand at the Methodist Hall on Saturday to answer questions and provide residents with more details of the plans, which include 150 new homes, a medical centre, new supermarket, youth club and pre-school, a caf/restaurant and offices and industrial space for start-up businesses.

Vincent Middleton, Chairman of Newburgh Estates, said: "We were delighted with the response. Opinion is still divided, but this was a great opportunity to allay some of the fears and to seek ideas from local people on what they would like to see in their community.

"We have taken this feedback on board and are in discussions with the Peak Park and the architects about incorporating some of the ideas into the plans."

Ideas put forward include making the village carbon neutral, planting a community orchard and giving visitors and residents the benefits of shared parking facilities.

The next consultation event is a village referendum at the Memorial Hall in Bradwell tomorrow (Friday), between 4pm and 9pm, when residents will be asked to answer "yes" or "no" to the question: "Do you support the outline planning application for the Newburgh site in its present form and scale?"

People can view the scheme and give comments online at www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/planning (application no: NP/DDD/1208/1089), or they can write to the Planning Service, Peak District National Park Authority, Aldern House, Baslow Road, Bakewell, DE45 1AE. The deadline for comments is February 20.

If planning is approved, the redevelopment would be phased over a period of five years and could start in 2010.
