Buxton Field Club
BUXTON Field Club enjoyed a slide presentation of Skokholm, a small island off the Pembrokeshire Coast by Dr John Jones, at their last meeting.
In spring the island is a mass of bluebells and the club followed the flora through the seasons. John's particular interest is lichens and he had photographed over one hundred and twenty to date.
The bays and islets are ideal for nesting seabirds - Manx Shearwater, storm petrel, puffin, guillemot and razorbill.
John was able to save future broods of chough chicks from dying by abseiling down a cliff to enter a cave and provide some shelter over their nests where the young were being killed by falling debris from the roof.
On Saturday February 21 the group have two speakers. Rosemary Furness will give a digital presentation of her visit to the Shetland Isles, before members cross the water to Oland, a Swedish island in the Baltic with Robin Evison.
Meet Methodist Schoolrooms, Higher Buxton (side entrance) 7.30pm. Visitors very welcome 2.
