A GRANT of £2,000 from High Peak Borough Council from the Going Local Fund, together with the gift of 60 tonnes of aggregate from Tarmac have made it possible for much needed repairs to be carried out on the path in Corbar Wood.

Buxton Civic Association owns most of the woodlands around the town which were donated by the Chatsworth Estate some 40 years ago.

They are a big responsibility for a small charity as trees need increasingly expensive care. Paths, walls, steps, access gates and signs also need maintenance and money.

"The paths in Corbar Wood have been deteriorating rapidly with so much wet weather in the last few seasons," said BCA chairman, Paul Dinsdale, "and so we are very grateful indeed for the practical help given by the Council and to Clive James and his colleagues at Tunstead Quarry for their generosity."

The first stage of the path repair project is now complete and we plan to apply for funds from appropriate grant-giving charities to finish repairs to paths and walls and to erect an information board later this year."

Corbar Wood was famous in Victorian guide books for its 'Swiss Walks' probably laid out by Sir Joseph Paxton, head gardener at Chatsworth and creator of the Crystal Palace.

Originally, the walks featured rustic bridges, summer houses and viewpoints.

If anyone has old photographs or postcards of the Swiss Walks in their heyday the BCA office at Poole's Cavern would be very interested to hear from them – call 01298 26978.
