Bridge work will tackle blackspot

WORK on an accident blackspot in Tintwistle is due to start after being approved by Derbyshire County Council.

The authority have agreed improvement measures at New Road Bridge and finance from Natural England has been secured for the work, which is due to start in the next few months.

Welcoming the 80,000 investment for creating a safe crossing in Tintwistle, local County Councillor Dave Wilcox says traffic signalling is a sensible measure which should reduce the number of accidents which have taken place in recent years.

County Council officers have been concerned for some time over the number of accidents that have occurred at Tintwistle Bridge and in their report to members say that signalling would have the advantage of controlling traffic on the Bridge as it is not sufficiently wide for vehicles to comfortably pass, especially with a large number of HGV's which use it on a daily basis.

"Two serious and three slight reported injury accidents over the last five years are the tip of the iceberg of the number of bumps that take place on the Bridge every year" said Cllr Wilcox.

"In the circumstances it would be irresponsible not to accept the resources from Natural England to improve the bridleway and also to make the road substantially safer than it is at the present time.

"A similar narrower bridge crosses the Etherow between Broadbottom and Charlesworth. Signalling there has improved safety and I am confident that the same will apply to the bridge between Tintwistle and Hadfield."

The investment on the bridge will fill another gap in the Pennine Bridleway which has missing links through Glossop. Each section of the trail is purpose-built for horseriders, mountain bikers and walkers.

When the trail is fully completed it will begin in Derbyshire and end at Byrness in Northumberland, a distance of 350 miles.
