Blue Lagoon danger alert

A WARNING has been issued about the potential dangers of disused quarries after a man had to be rescued after a fall.

The 30-year-old man was with friends in an area known as the Blue Lagoon within the disused Harpur Hill Quarry where he apparently had jumped from nearby rocks into the water and misjudged the situation, landing awkwardly and injuring his leg.

Buxton Mountain Rescue Team were called to assist the ambulance service to haul the casualty and stretcher up the steep sided quarry and then carry for him several hundred metres to the waiting land ambulance.

A team spokesman said: "We understand that this location is popular, particularly during hot weather. However we urge extreme caution as this is deep water which may also be contaminated and there may be hidden obstacles below the water which could cause significant injuries.

"This incident also involved people drinking alcohol, which makes a dangerous combination."

A man from Northwich, Cheshire, was transferred to the Macclesfield and District General Hospital for further treatment and observation following the possibility of contaminated water being swallowed.
