SNOW and blizzards have hit Buxton today – forcing the closure of roads and schools.

Buxton Advertiser photographer Jason Chadwick captured the blizzards which broke out at lunchtime after a brief respite.

Traffic came to a standstill on the A6 near Whaley Bridge during the morning rush hour as heavy snow fell.

A number of roads had to be shut and several schools closed for the day.

A Derbyshire County Council spokesman said gritters had been treating routes and added: “It’ll become mostly dry soon after midnight and frost is likely overnight with ice a risk as roads are likely to remain damp.”

Temperatures have been struggling to reach above freezing since the start of the week.

A Met Office spokesman said cold weather looks set to continue across the area over the coming days.
