Biker deaths on increase

THE CAT and Fiddle has been named the most dangerous road in Britain for biking after a big increase in the number of fatal crashes.

This year's EuroRAP report identified the 12km road between Macclesfield and Buxton as the UK's least safe.

Since 2008, there has been a 42 per cent increase in the number of fatal and serious collisions on the road.

Of the 27 fatal and serious collisions between 2005 and 2007, 18 involved motorcyclists – almost three times the average for the motorway and A-roads.

The A54 Buxton to Congleton ranked number five in the list.

Dr Joanne Hill, director of the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) which carried out the research, said: "Eight out of ten of the 'persistently higher risk' roads are in the north of England, notably around Buxton, Macclesfield, Sheffield and in Yorkshire and Humberside.

"It is the the busy non-primary routes that take volumes of traffic between towns and villages across Britain that the survey shows represent the highest risk, accounting for 62 per cent of road deaths in total."

Dr Hill said that the RSF has promised to help authorities and the public rid risky roads by tracking and sharing information.

In May, Cheshire East Council promised 135,000 for speed cameras across the road by the end of 2009.

On the Cat and Fiddle, the speed limit has been reduced from 60mph to 50mph.
