Big Bake for Haitians is jam-packed

GENEROUS High Peak residents have been pulling out all the stops to raise cash for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

A total of 3,152 was raised for the Haiti Appeal on Saturday during the 'Big Buxton Bake', organised by Churches Together and the Women's Institute.

More than 500 people at Buxton Methodist Church tucked into cakes, biscuits and jams which had been produced by volunteers.

Fairtrade tea and coffee was also served, sponsored by Waitrose PLC, along with soup-and-roll lunches.

And for a parental donation, local author and artist Susie Poole displayed her animal drawing skills to children.

Chairman of Churches Together, Audrey Getliffe, said: "It's been absolutely marvellous, the way so many people and helpers were able to come together at such short notice to raise such a huge sum of money for such a worthy cause in these troubled financial times."

School kids do their bit

GENEROUS High Peak schoolchildren are continuing to fundraise to help victims coming to terms with the catastrophic earthquake which rocked Haiti.

Fairfield Infant and Nursery School raised 250, after holding a non-uniform day.

Headteacher Sue Coackley said: "The children heard many reports on the news and asked to do something."

Meanwhile, Fairfield Junior School pupils and staff wore colourful hats in return for a donation of 50p, raising 167.67.

And at Thornsett Primary School, the school council came up with the idea of running a pyjama day.

For a donation of around 1, pupils and staff were allowed to go into school in pyjamas for the day.

Monies raised will go towards the Haiti Earthquake Appeal, helping victims of the earthquake which occurred on January 12 and measured 7.0 on the Richter Scale.

According to the International Red Cross, three million people have been affected by the disaster.

Between 100,000 and 200,000 people have died, while thousands of bodies have been buried in mass graves.

• The Disaster Emergency Committee's Haiti Earthquake Appeal has raised 46million.

Island theme at Burbage

PUPILS at Burbage Primary School have raised 610 for earthquake-stricken Haiti.

The youngsters each gave a donation in return for dressing up on an island theme during a fundraising day held at the school.

The event also provided an opportunity for the children to learn more about the island of Haiti and natural disasters.
