Police are appealing for witnesses after two men were assaulted in Whaley Bridge by burglars armed with a baseball bat and a knife.

The attackers burst into the flat on Beech Road at about 3.20am on Saturday wearing balaclavas.

One of the assailants hit a 23-year-old man with a telescopic expandable baton or cosh. His 22-year-old friend intervened and was also hit with the weapon.

The man carrying the knife smashed the television and other items in the living room. It is understood that nothing was stolen.

The first victim suffered bruising to the arm and cheek and was taken to Stepping Hill Hospital. The second suffered minor bruising.

The offenders were described as white, of muscular build, 6ft 1in to 6ft 4in tall and wearing dark clothing.

Detective Sergeant Jo Brett said: “This incident was extremely traumatic for the victims and we are appealing for anyone with information to help us bring those responsible to justice.

“If you saw anyone in the area around the times of the incident, or anything that didn’t quite feel right, then please tell us, no matter how insignificant you think it is.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, 0800 555111.
