Band wins 10,000 notes from Lottery

A HIGH PEAK band will be able to carry on making sweet music after receiving a donation of almost £10,000 for new instruments.

Thornsett Band received 9,474 for new instruments for its young learner members from the Awards For All National Lottery scheme which supports local groups.

Chairman Dave Ford said: "It's great news. It's fantastic to be able to replace a lot of our old instruments.

"We've never been able to provide new instruments for the learners – they've always had to make do with second hand ones. This will give everyone a real boost."

As well as the usual brass band instruments such as cornets and euphoniums, Thornsett has also bought two miniature tubas, which will be suitable for young children.

The new instruments also mean the band will be able to take on more recruits.

Anyone can join the band, which costs 2 a week, including free loan of an instrument and tuition twice a week from experienced brass players.

Thornsett Band is also on the lookout for a new musical director after their last MD, Fairey Band cornet player Gary Parker had to retire because of family and work commitments.

Guest conductors have been invited to join the band for special events over the last few months but now the band are looking to appoint a full-time musical director to help develop the new talent.

"Our temporary conductors have been great, and it has been interesting for our players to work with different musical directors," said Dave. "But now it is time to find the right person to do the job full-time."

Anyone interested in becoming musical director should contact Dave Ford on 01663 747223.
