A Bakewell church is half way through its appeal to raise £300,000 to repair its roof, after launching a campaign last year.

All Saints Church, on South Church Street, has raised £150,000 thanks to grants and donations since starting the roof appeal in May.

The chancel roof, phase one of the repair work, is expected to be finished by the end of the month and phase two, the roof of the nave, is expected to start in summer.

The final stage, the remainder of the repairs, is anticipated to start next year.

Fundraisers expect to achieve their total within two year.

Chairman of the appeal Bill Bryant, pictured, said: “We want the public to give a final big push. The congregation and the people of Bakewell have been very generous.

“We’re very pleased at the progress so far and hope that we’ll be able to raise the remainder in the next couple of years. The church roof is in need of major repair and renewal, urgently.”

The grade I listed building was founded in 920 in Saxon times.

The money is needed to fund 236 panels of lead sheets, gutter linings, rainwater chutes, flashings, scaffolding, protective sheeting, thousands of nails, clips and other fixings, and hundreds of hours of skilled craftsmen’s time to complete the project.

Donations can be made by sending them to the treasurer Mrs J Glencross, at 1, The Meadows, Grisedale Road, Great Longstone, Derbyshire DE45 1TP.

Cheques should be made payable to Bakewell PCC Roof Fund.
