Backing troops in war zones

MEMBERS of the 6th Buxton Rangers are assembling care packages to send out to coalition troops serving overseas.

They are backing the national Support our Soldiers (SOS) campaign by sending out parcels laden with snacks, toiletries and recreational items.

Ranger Melanie Fletcher said: "We decided to support the campaign because one of our members brothers is going to be deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq in December.

"Also, some of the soldiers out there are our age, and it makes such a massive difference to the guys, and is a big morale boost, to know that we are thinking of them back home."

The 6th Buxton Rangers – part of the Girlguiding UK network for ages 14 and over – will be holding a fund-raiser on Wednesday July 23.

Proceeds from the quiz night and hot pot supper will be split between SOS and the Rangers' other nominated charity, Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

This was chosen after a member benefited from the services of the air ambulance following a fall.

The fund-raiser will be held at St Anne's Parish Centre, Hardwick Square, Buxton, at 7pm. Admission is 5. A maximum of five people per quiz team are allowed.

Tickets are available by calling 07970 055 407 or 01298 814975.
