Amy hopes to change climate of opinion

A Hope Valley student is off to Poland next week to urge governments to take stronger action to combat climate change.

Amy Mount, 20, from Edale, is taking part in the UK's first official Youth Delegation (UKYD) to the United Nations climate negotiations and will be joining young people from around the world to put pressure on politicians to act decisively.

Currently reading Geography at Cambridge University, Amy was selected to join the delegation for her previous experience and commitment to environmental issues. She is one of 15 selected from around the UK.

"The decisions these negotiators make will probably not affect them, but they will affect us, the young people who inherit the world they choose to leave behind," said Amy.

"Climate change will define our generation: it will shape the way we live and the world we grow up in. I'm really excited about this opportunity to work with others who feel as passionately as I do."

Last year, youth delegations from Canada, the US, Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Belgium and other countries were very involved in the negotiations and played a role in establishing the Bali Roadmap. However, there was very little representation from the UK. This year, the UKYD plans to make sure British youth have a voice. The delegation will be calling on our leaders to play a constructive role in forging the new global agreement.

They will also send messages to people back home about the need to act on climate change by doing daily creative actions, blogging, recording podcasts and writing articles for the media.

The conference at Poznan, in Poland, is aiming to create the groundwork for the crucial agreement scheduled to be signed in Copenhagen next year.
