Amazon and Kindle write final chapter for Christian bookshop

Buxton's Christian Bookshop is to close

Buxton's Christian Bookshop is to close

AFTER almost three decades of trading, Buxton’s Christian Bookshop is to close next month.

The shop, on Market Street, has sadly fallen victim to the recession and will cease to trade on December 24 after 27 years in the town.

Mary Fairhurst, chairman of the Buxton Christian Bookshop trustees, said: “It is simply because of the economic climate, the recession and the fact that people are now downloading or ordering books on Amazon or using Kindles.

“We are losing money and have decided that we will close whilst we still have our heads above water.”

Two part-time members of staff will lose their jobs when the shop, which is a registered charity, closes next month. There are also 12 volunteers who give their time to work there.

Mary added: “We have 12 wonderful volunteers who work for nothing and we also have two paid part-time members of staff who have also been wonderful. Some of them have been working here for a very long time.”

The trustees are considering a number of proposals regarding the future of the shop, but it will cease trading as a Christian bookshop in December.

The shop is having an open evening on Wednesday, December 5 from 5pm to 7pm. During the evening refreshments will be served and there will also be a chance to meet the volunteers and staff who have worked in the shop over the years.

All stock will be reduced by 25 per cent on the evening of December 5 only.

However, from now until the store closes in December, all goods, including second hand, bargain books and Traidcraft will be reduced by ten per cent.
