A world of art on our doorstep

RURAL landscapes such as Monsal Dale, Wildboarclough and Kinder Reservoir – as well as scenes from further afield including as Fort William, Gozo and Nepal – have been brought to life in Buxton and High Peak Art Society's annual exhibition.

The art society is a lively group of artists from all parts of the local community and each member has a different approach.

This year's exhibition, at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery, boasts watercolours, oil paintings, pastels and acrylics, of everything from landscapes, flowers and wildlife to abstracts and portraits.

It opened earlier this month, when awards, judged by Steven Bewsher, were handed out to members, including the coveted title of 'Artist of the Year', which was won for the second consecutive year by Sheila Benson, this time for her painting Driftwood.

Fellow members Geoff Slack, Sheila Hurst and Phil Kneller were all highly commended. The Waller Cup was awarded to Tom Wolstencroft for his picture entitled 'Sailing at Carsington'.

John Benson, the society's exhibition and publicity secretary, said: "The standard of the artwork this year has been very high indeed. We have 51 pieces on show, representing the work of 26 different artists."

This year, the society is asking members of the public to pick their favourite picture in the exhibition by casting a vote in the box provided at the museum.

Once the exhibition closes on Saturday January 2, the votes will be counted and a picture of the winning piece will be submitted for inclusion in the magazine Leisure Painter.
