A new name in store for centre?

PLANS to change the name of the Spring Gardens Shopping Centre in Buxton have come under fire.

The precinct could be renamed the Springs Shopping Centre if planning permission is granted.

Some shoppers have criticised the proposals – but the popular centre has defended its possible name change.

The plans would see signs with the new name and a new logo installed in and around the shopping centre.

Anne Cleary said: “It’s unnecessary.

“It seems like a waste of money especially when there’s a recession.

“The street is called Spring Gardens so the centre should be named after that.”

Helen Dawson commented: “Let’s have more shops, nevermind a name change.”

Another shopper, who did not want to be named, added: “It may seem pointless but you could say this fresh new brand will attract more retailers to Buxton.”

A spokesman for the Spring Gardens Shopping Centre said: “Our aim is to enhance the precinct’s visibility by creating more consistent and informative signage in and around the centre to make our offering clearer to shoppers and visitors.

“Buxton is a vibrant tourist attraction and lots of people visit each year – we want to play a part in helping encourage more people to use the town’s retail offering.”

The spokesman was unable to disclose the cost of the plans at this stage.

High Peak Borough Council is yet to make a decision on the plans.
