A Level: Emma eyes career in politics

Whaley Bridge's Matthew Allison, a student at Abbey College Manchester, will study business at Nottingham Trent University after achieving a Distinction Distinction Distinction in Business BTEC.

Hayfield’s Emma Foster, a student at Abbey College Manchester student will study philosophy at King’s College London after acheiving A Level grades A* A and B in psychology, religious studies and history.

The 18-year-old, of Didsbury Terrace, recently enjoyed spending the day shadowing former Health Secretary and Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Andy Burnham at his Westminster office.

During the day, she was able to ask Mr Burnham questions, and gained an insight into how the MP worked when in Westminster.

This followed a visit to see Mr Burnham in action in his constituency office in Leigh. As a result she was able to create a fuller picture of the life of an MP by gaining an insight into how he runs his constituency as well as contributing to party politics in his role in Westminster.

During the visit Emma attended two debates on NHS Waiting Lists and Food Banks, allowing her to see Mr Burnham in action as he interacted with his team and fellow MPS. Emma was also invited to an event in Mr Burnham’s office which was attended by other Labour MPs, including Lord John Reid.

Emma said: “I am thrilled with my results and very excited to be attending King’s College London to read philosophy. I have really enjoyed my time at Abbey College Manchester and can’t thank the teaching team enough for their support and encouragement.”

And fellow Abbey College Manchester student Matthew Allison, from Whaley Bridge, is heading to Nottingham Trent University to study business after achieving a Distinction Distinction Distinction in his Business BTEC.

The 18-year-old, of Bings Road, said: “I’m very proud of my BTEC results and my experiences here at Abbey College have been extremely rewarding. “I’m now looking forward to the next step in my academic career, having really built up my confidence in my subject.

“The course itself has been fantastic, opening so many doors for me while giving me a thorough understanding of Business from many different perspectives. The level of support given to me here at Abbey College Manchester has been great.”
