CELEBRATIONS for the forthcoming Olympics and Queen’s Diamond Jubilee get underway this weekend in the High Peak.
The fun begins on Saturday when Chinley Games takes place on the village football fields from 10am to 2pm. The day will feature a wide range of sports and games plus refreshments.
On Sunday, attention switches to Bamford Recreation Ground which is hosting an Olympicnic from 12noon to 3pm. Villagers are invited to bring their own picnic and take part in the sports on offer.
Then on Saturday, June 2, Chapel-en-le-Frith Memorial Park is hosting a Diamond Jubilee Olympicnic from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Anyone attending should take their own food and be prepared to compete in various sports.
Many of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations across the High Peak have been part funded by High Peak Borough Council grants.
The council are also hosting a number of events to mark both milestones. On May 29 a Young at Heart dance featuring 1950s music and afternoon tea takes place at the Pavilion Gardens when dancers are invited to wear red, white and blue.
On June 2, Diamond Jubilee Markets are being held on Buxton Market Place and Glossop Market Square from 10am to 4pm when highlights will include live music, children’s fairground rides and a jubilee prize hunt. There will also be fine foods and traditional goods alongside crafts and home ware.
