A HOTEL which has been at the centre of controversy for decades goes under the hammer next week – at the knock down guide price of £150,000 to £200,000.

Bennetston Hall, Sparrowpit, is up for auction next Wednesday through Frank Marshall at the Mere Court Hotel, Knutsford.

The Hall was at the centre of a long running legal row which ended up with the premises at one stage being owned by the Legal Aid Board.

The building is listed as being a substantial former Victorian mansion situated in the Peak Park, a refurbishment/redevelopment opportunity which could be suitable for a variety of uses subject to planning consent.

It is up for sale now on the instruction of the receivers.

Bennetston Hall has had a number of uses over the years, including as a hotel, nightclub and private dwelling.

Robert Ottiwell Gifford Bennett, who also gave his name to Buxton’s Bennett Street, was a prominent local doctor who paid for the construction of Bennetston Hall back in the 19th century.
