New Mills Army Cadet Ryan Tideswell travelled to London recently to collect his Gold Duke of Edinburgh (D of E) Award.

Ryan, who attended New Mills Army Cadet Force, met the Duke of Edinburgh and was presented with his certificate at St James’ Palace by impressionist Jon Culshaw.

He spent 14 months working towards the award, with activities including playing cricket with Dove Holes Cricket Club, completing a summer mountain proficiency course, attending the army cadet force for over a year and completing a bee keeping course with the Stockport branch of the Cheshire Beekeeping Association.

He said: “Completing my bronze, silver and gold D of E has made me realise that you can do anything you want if you put your mind to it.

“I suffered a serious back injury in 2010 but this has not stopped me completing this award and I hope I have encouraged other army cadets to complete their awards too.”
