Tintwistle Athletic FC has been awarded a £48,880 grant from Sport England to help improve its pitch, which is unplayable during poor weather.

The Glossopdale club is one of 97 sports projects across England to receive a share of £5.5 million of National Lottery’s Protected Playing Fields fund.

The money will allow the New Road side to install a new drainage system, level out the pitch and re-grade the surface, helping to reduce fixture cancellations and increase participation.

Paul Amos, chairman of Tintwistle Athletic, said: “We have grown as a club, providing football opportunities from 4-year-olds all the way through juniors, youth and into open age now with excess of 200 members.

“We are delighted that Sport England has approved funding to allow us to drain this pitch and improve the quality of the playing surface.

“These improvements, along with the guarantee of protection for at least 25 years, means that this sports facility can now be enjoyed by our community for many years to come.”

Sport England chair Nick Bitel said: “We know how valuable playing fields are to communities throughout the country, giving individuals and teams somewhere to get active and enjoy sport. This fund allows us to maintain and protect these spaces so that high quality sports pitches are available in the heart of communities.”
