Young bookworms donned colourful costumes to celebrate World Book Day across the High Peak on Thursday.

The literary-themed day was marked by a series of events at local schools and libraries, with pupils and staff getting into the spirit with some colourful, creative and wacky fancy dress in honour of their favourite storybook characters.

A wizardry quartet of Harry Potters, a Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Mary Poppins and some wonderful Alice in Wonderland characters were among the stand-out fancy dress at Chapel-en-le-Frith High School, as Year 7 pupils took part in quizzes and reading exercises.

There was similar scenes at Monyash Primary School, where junior pupils read stories with the infant class and Year 6 children visited Flagg Nursery School to read to the nursery children.

A character parade, where children, staff and parents were invited to talk about their favourite books and characters, kicked off the celebrations at Fairfield Endowed Junior School, followed by a readathon and online activities.
