Follow family trails at Lathkill Dale

Have your say

FAMILIES looking for something different to do over May Day bank holiday are invited to Lathkill Dale on Monday May 7 to follow a variety of short trails with a difference!

The ‘Lathkilltrail’ day being organised by Natural England will provide visitors with the chance to follow a range of short trails and for the first time this year, a ‘geocaching’ style treasure hunt.

All of the trails will be designed to give families and others the chance to get to know Lathkill Dale and its wildlife in an unusual and enjoyable way.

Paul Maddox, Community Outreach Adviser for Derbyshire Dales National Nature Reserve said: “This year’s Lathkilltrail day builds on those that have proved so enjoyable in previous years with favourite activities from these being joined by new ones including a high-tech treasure hunt making use of hand-held GPS devices.”

The base for the day will be the Over Haddon end of Lathkill Dale. Parking is available in the public car park at Over Haddon (charge) and the reserve gate can be reached from here by taking the lane down the side of this.

Once at the reserve entrance, participants should follow the track for about a quarter of a mile until they reach the event base which will be clearly visible at the woodland entrance just before Mandale Mine.

Those wanting to take part are welcome to drop in at any point between 11am and 3.30pm for as long as they want. There is no charge to take part in the activities although donations will be welcome.

No booking is required although it is recommended for those wishing to try the geocaching activity for which a number of hand-held GPS devices will be available to borrow for 45 minute slots throughout the day. Further details of these time slots can be found by visiting the East Midlands events page on Those borrowing GPS devices will be asked to leave car keys or a credit card as a deposit to ensure the safe return of the device.

People coming to the event are reminded to bring suitable clothing and footwear and that children must be accompanied by an adult.
