Tom voted for us not to know
IN HIS column last week, Tom Levitt condemns 'cheque book gutter journalism' for revealing details of MPs' expenses.
But on Page 2 of the same edition he praises journalists and says: 'If politicians and others sometimes think we have a raw deal from them, perhaps we are not telling them the full story well enough.' Quite.
Of course, Mr Levitt never wanted us to know the full story. He voted with the Government to deny us access to details of MPs' expenses.
He clearly feels MPs are above the Government's own Freedom of Information Act. One law for us, another law for them. Fortunately, the courts thought differently.
But the Daily Telegraph spilled the beans before Mr Levitt's Government could cook the books. Thank heavens for 'gutter journalism'. He says these journalists have 'connived with criminals' to obtain the information.
Much as he might like it to be otherwise, someone is only a criminal once they have been convicted by an independent jury. Some of Mr Levitt's parliamentary friends may yet fall into this category.
