Taking gloss out of Labour glossary
MR LEVITT states (Buxton Advertiser 25/6/09) that the "ongoing saga of expenses continues to divert MPs' attention from our first duty, which is to serve our constituents."
To be able to trust MPs is essential because they enact laws and control public spending. To call the breach of trust over expenses, and resulting public anger, a diversion is typical of the euphemisms that New Labour uses.
The latest euphemism is redaction of expenses. Redaction means to edit or prepare for publication. It does not mean to censor material.
Here are a few more New Labour gems:
* spin = propaganda;
* credit crunch = economic slump;
* global recession = blame any one except us;
* sleaze = corruption;
* mistake = fraud;
* within the rules = greed;
* flipping = using public money to buy property to sell at a profit;
* public enquiry = whitewash;
* we will listen = take no notice;
* lessons will be learned = do nothing;
* extraordinary rendition = torture;
* quantitive easing =inflationary printing of money;
* Prime Minister's Questions = sycophantic questions from Labour MPs.
However, before we are too critical of the Government's perversion of language, let us remember New Labour's jingle: Things can only get better.That, at least, is still true.
