SLIDESHOW: Large turn-out for anniversary

DESPITE appalling weather, hundreds of people attended Remembrance Sunday Services held throughout the High Peak.

Mayor Robin Baldry led the tributes in Buxton as young and old came together throughout the borough to pay their respects to the fallen.

He attended a service at the cenotaph on the Slopes, Buxton, conducted jointly by The Rev John Hudghton, Rector of Buxton, and the Rev Colin Smith, Superintendent Minister, Methodist Church.

In a scene recreated at memorials across the area, Royal British Legion members were joined by members of the armed forces, Army cadets, representatives from community groups and various youth organisations including Scouts, Guides, Boys and Girls Brigade, to lay poppy wreaths.

* A two-minute silence was observed in public buildings, schools, shops and offices at 11am on Tuesday, Armistice Day, to mark the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

New Mills

AROUND 500 people gathered in New Mills to mark Remembrance Sunday and honour fallen servicemen and women.

Following a service at St George's Church, conducted by the Rev John Baines and the Rev Jane Barron, the congregation assembled around the war memorial outside to observe the two-minute silence. Wreaths and memorial crosses were laid by many local organisations and individuals.

A parade, led by New Mills Band and the Army Cadet Force, then made its way through the town centre to the Memorial Garden in High Lea Park.

New Mills Mayor Alistair Stevens, councillors, members of local groups and many other supporters were in attendance.

After the playing of the Last Post, wreaths and crosses were laid at the memorial.

Chapel-en-le-Frith

In Chapel-en-le-Frith a parade assembled at Thornbrook Road and made its way through the town for a service at the Parish Church.

It was followed by the laying of wreaths by a host of local organisations, including the Parish Council, at the War Memorial on the Market Place.

The parade then reassembled to march back to where they had started from.
