Olympics at Peak School
DISABLED children at Peak School in Chinley have been celebrating National MOVE Week with Olympic-themed parties
A day of fun games with parachutes, ribbons, curling and skittles, was held to celebrate the difference the unique MOVE mobility programme had made to their lives and those of their families.
MOVE is a charity that helps the UK's most severely physically disabled children and young people develop mobility skills and take their first steps to independence.
Liz Gray, a MOVE Practitioner and teacher at Peak School said: "National MOVE Week is a great opportunity for us to celebrate all the successes and achievements of children on the MOVE Programme over the last year and to thank the whole team around the child, including - parents, teachers and therapists - who worked together to make it happen."
Over 70 per cent of children on the MOVE Programme increase their mobility within the first 12 months on the scheme, which can have huge benefits for their social development, education, and health. Above all, increased mobility enables children to interact with the world around them and be first and foremost, children.
Peter Holland, Chief Executive of MOVE, welcomed the opportunity for children and their families in Chinley to celebrate the difference the programme had made.
"It might not sound like much, but seeing your child sit on a normal chair or stand up by holding onto the edge of the table is a life-changing moment for parents of those with severe disabilities who have been told their child will never be able to achieve anything for themselves."
