Grown-up look to school centre
A NEWLY-REFURBISHED Learning Resource Centre at Buxton Community School has been officially opened.
The centre has undergone a 70,000 redesign to shed its dated image and create a more adult environment for pupils.
It is equipped with 12 computers, a colour printer and scanning facilities, as well as 9,000 books, not including a vast array of magazines and journals.
Along with new fixtures and fittings, a small tutorial room has been created, complete with a digital projector. This is separated from the main area by new sliding doors, to create a soundproof room.
And easy seating at the entrance to the centre has given it a more welcoming feel.
Headteacher Deb Hill said: "This centre is such an important resource because it is used by all the children at the school.
"It is used much more beyond just taking out books. We run lots of after-school clubs and reading groups, and at break and lunch times pupils are always trying to use the area."
Visiting children's author Alan Gibbons was on hand to cut the ribbon and officially open the centre last Friday, when he also gave pupils a hilarious insight into his career and his love of books.
He finished by saying: "A library isn't a load of shelves with books. It's a temple of ideas. You find your identity, you find your dreams, you find your passions, and that is why I love opening libraries."
Pupils were invited to name the book they would next like to take out from the centre, write it on a piece of card and attach it to a helium balloon. The person whose balloon remained upright the longest had their chosen book bought for them.
