Graduates told to beat the recession

BRITAIN'S recession will last as long as we let it, Derby University Buxton's Vice Chancellor Professor John Coyne told this year's graduates as they left to join the world of work.

Students from all over the world gathered in the Dome to receive their degrees from the Duke of Devonshire, taking part in the ceremony for the first time in his new role as Chancellor of the University.

"This recession will be as long or as short as we make it," said Prof Coyne, who warned against the dangers of talking ourselves into deeper and deeper economic gloom.

"It will need application, creativity, hard work and a certain resilience. These are the characteristics which will be shared in full measure by those graduating today – these are the characteristics necessary to succeed.

"These are challenging times in which to graduate, but every challenge is a time of opportunity if you have that positive, resilient disposition."

The University received a vote of confidence during the traditional vote of thanks from the students.

Katharina Sickora, (23) who graduated with a Masters in Tourism Management, explained why she chose Buxton over her native Germany to complete her education.

She said it wasn't just the Sunday roasts, the British love of queuing - with lines stretching right across the pavement at every cashpoint, – something not seen in "hectic" Germany – or the way people in Buxton wore summer clothes even in wintry weather.

Katharina, who will take up a job in an Austrian Alpine spa resort, said it was the freedom of choice at Derby which had allowed her to concentrate on a range of subjects which suited her as an individual with specific career targets, a system very different to the more strictly proscribed courses in Europe.
