Ex-student goes stateside

FORMER Hope Valley College Student Francesca Winder has been honing her dance skills in America.

Francesca left Hope Valley in 2005 with excellent GCSE results including five A's and an A*, before she moved on to Tapton school in Sheffield to study A Levels. After completing her A-Levels, Francesca moved on to York St Johns University to study Dance.

Francesca said: "I had always wanted to study abroad and that was a factor in me choosing the course at York. I had to send an application form and personal statement to the States and was accepted without an audition."

Francesca spent three months at State University of New York, Postdam, learning new moves, techniques and skills as well as learning the technical side to dancing.

"University over there is completely different to university in England both socially and academically," she said.

"I got the opportunity to work with visiting artists which isn't something offered at York. I had such a good time and would recommend taking the chance to anyone."

Outside academia, Francesca has performed in many productions for her dance school at City Hall in Sheffield as well as successfully auditioning for a professional production of Fame, which she was forced to pull out of to concentrate on her university studies.

She hopes to pursue a career in choreography once she finishes at university.
