Echoes of the Somme still heard
READERS may be aware that 93 years ago today (Wednesday 1st July) eight Buxton men, who are commemorated on the Buxton War Memorial were killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
Those who fell on that fateful day were: Capt. Norman VAUDREY, 'B' Coy, 17th Battalion, Manchester Regt, aged 33; 2nd Lt. William Edward BRUNT, 22nd Battalion, Manchester Regt, aged 22; 2nd Lt. Robert Ivan DONCASTER, 15th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers; Pt Herman Douglas EVISON, Machine Gun Corps (formerly: Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regt.); Pt. Maurice LAIT, 12th Battalion, York & Lancaster Regt, (Sheffield pals) aged 19; Pt. Sidney NORTON, 9th Battalion, Devonshire Regt, aged 20; Pt. Thomas RADFORD, 11th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regt, aged 28 and Pt. Thomas SIDEBOTHAM, 1st/6th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regt, aged 17.
Currently I am working on a website to commemorate ALL of the fallen on the Buxton Memorial and if any reader has any information on these men, or any other on the memorial, that they would like to share with me - especially photographs, etc. - they are welcome to contact me by post, telephone or email.
God bless these brave Buxton lads.
