Double first for Buxton teachers
EVENTS Management experts at the University of Derby Buxton have won a prestigious national award for the second year in a row.
The Events Management Team – which teaches students how to publicise, market and stage events such as conferences, concerts and exhibitions – has scooped the Excellence In Training category for the second year running in the National Outdoor Events Association (NOEA) Awards.
The accolade recognises University initiatives such as the recent development - in partnership with the Leisure & Event Safety unit of building, engineering and environmental consultancy Capita Symonds - of a Diploma in Events Safety Management.
Available from September 2008, this short course will give industry professionals a safety training qualification equivalent to a second year undergraduate degree course semester. Strong interest has already been shown in it by the industry.
Capita Symonds' Leisure and Event Safety Director Richard Limb, one of the course leaders, has also been made a Visiting Fellow of the University.
Franc Avila, Programme Leader for the University's BA (Hons) Events Management Course, said: "We feel the new diploma we will be offering is something that the industry has been waiting for. We're very excited about working with Capita Symonds on it."
Dr Peter Dewhurst, Head of the School of Culture and Lifestyle at the University of Derby Buxton, added: "This is a highly prestigious award within the Events Management industry.
"To win it once is good, to win it twice on the trot is exceptional and shows the quality of Events Management teaching at the University."
