Awards recognise success
AN AWARDS ceremony has taken place to honour former pupils of Hope Valley College.
GCSE certificates and awards were handed out to last year's Year 11 – who equalled the college's record of 72 per cent of pupils achieving five + A* to C grades.
Principal Bernie Hunter said: "It is important to recognise how many students achieved individual success against overwhelming odds and to see them here tonight makes us incredibly proud."
The presentations were made by former pupil and Derbyshire Police Constable of the Year, Doug Eyre.
Special awards were also handed out to those pupils who excelled in certain subject areas.
The Mark Cottril Memorial Trophy was awarded to Jamie Ollerenshaw, in recognition of difficulties he overcame to achieve.
The award was donated to the college by the parents of Mark Cottril, a former pupil who sadly passed away last year.
Another inaugural award was the JS Trophy for Outstanding Achievement and Engagement with Language Learning, which was awarded to Rachel Winterbottom. This award was dedicated to the college by retiring Assistant Headteacher John Stoddard, who will leave at Christmas after almost 20 years.
Also collecting a certificate was teacher assistant Caroline Tattershall, who achieved a GCSE in History after working with the GSCE history group over the two-year course.
