A WEEKEND of family celebrations is how Harpur Hill couple Jane and Bill Baker are to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary.
The couple, who have three daughters, one son, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, married at St Anne’s Catholic Church, on August 19, 1961.
Jane, 74, and Bill, 72, met in 1955 at one of the dances at the Pavilion Gardens which saw regular performances from the Big Bands of the day.
They set up home on Kirkstone Road where they have lived ever since.
Jane worked at the Devonshire Hospital until they started their family while Bill worked at Beswick’s Lime Works for 33 years and later at Duron.
Bill was inspired to take up model making as a hobby after creating a scale model of Solomon’s Temple, which has been displayed at Buxton Museum.
In 1984 while Bill was in hospital awaiting a bypass operation and decided they should go on a big holiday to America.
“I said to Jane when I get out of here we will go to America and we went coast to coast.”
The trip inspired further travels to Canada, Egypt and China. The couple continue to enjoy coach holidays all over the UK.
Bill said: “I can honestly say we have had a good life and couldn’t have had a better family.”
