A COMMUNITY towpath adoption scheme is to be launched in Disley tonight (Friday).
Under the new agreement, British Waterways will supervise task groups in a range of activities from towpath maintenance to clearing over-hanging trees, clearing graffiti and wildlife surveys.
The launch event, and presentation of the adoption certificate, will take place at Disley Community Centre at 7.30pm.
Cassie Weaver, British Waterways Volunteer Co-ordinator, said the ‘adoption’ would involve undertaking practical days sprucing up the canalside environment in addition to regularly monitoring its condition.
“We are already active in the area and we hope this event will encourage further outdoor community engagement while enjoying the canal environment,” she added.
Short talks by Cassie Weaver and Ian Edgar MBE on the Peak Forest Canal and Bugsworth Basin Restoration will also be presented at the launch.
