FAMILIES joined in the fun as a host of sporting events were held to celebrate the opening of a new multi-user games area in Chapel’s Memorial Park.
The project is the culmination of 18 months of hard work by the Friends of the Park, who secured £50,000 from the Big Lottery Fund’s Community Spaces programme, with help from Chapel Parish Council.
Chairman of the Parish Council Mike Harrison officially opened the new facility on Saturday.
Chairman of the Friends of the Park Dennis Wyatt said: “We had a wonderful day – the weather was perfect.”
During the afternoon, sports group the Derbyshire the Village Games provided coaching for netball, rounders, circuit training, basketball, penalty shoot-outs and various other activities enjoyed by adults and children.
Mr Wyatt said: “The youngsters and their parents all had a marvellous time.
“It started off with a penalty shoot-out on the MUGA followed by mixed multi sports and netball for adults.”
Work to create the new facility took a couple of months longer than planned to complete.
“I would like to apologise to park users for the site being in a mess all summer,” said Mr Wyatt.
He thanked park users for their patience and said he hoped the MUGA would be as well used as the existing skate park.
The new area provides an all- weather surface and is marked out for a variety of sports including hockey, cricket, netball, basketball and football.
