Students and staff at Buxton’s two secondary schools are celebrating very successful inspections just before the half-term break.

Headteachers Brendan Hickey at St Thomas More and Deb Hill at Buxton Community School were both delighted with their official stamp of approval as ‘good’ schools and are ambitious to build on their current achievements.

Mrs Hill said: “As headteachers, we work very cooperatively with each other. I was pleased to get a good luck text from Brendan on May 13 and by the Wednesday I was texting him! We really hope that everyone in Buxton will appreciate the hard work that goes on in our schools and that there is so much to be proud of about the young people in our town.”

Mr Hickey added: “The relationship between the two secondary schools in Buxton is superb. It is wonderful to have the excellent work done by our two schools, for the community of Buxton, externally recognised in this way.”

Mrs Hill added: “It was particularly rewarding that inspectors applauded our commitment to individual students and saw our sixth form as one of the main strengths of our school.” The Community School’s report states: “Teaching is good overall, with some outstanding practice. Teachers have high expectations of students and develop good working relationships in the classroom.”

Mr Hickey added: “The students deserve the judgement of outstanding for their behaviour and for their spiritual, moral, cultural and social education. They are a delight to teach.” St Thomas More’s report said: “The excellent behaviour of students during lessons is a key factor in their good learning and achievement. Students like the small size of the school and believe this contributes to the quality of their relationships with staff and with each other.”

The Chairs of Governors at both schools added their congratulations. Father Dennis Higgins and Roger Horne thanked the staff at St Thomas More and Buxton Community School for all their hard work – as well as the school governors who give up their own time to support both schools.
