A NEW educational course for drivers who commit minor motoring offences is now being offered by Derbyshire police and the Casualty Reduction Enforcement Support Team.
A national course called What’s Driving Us? was launched earlier this year by the Association of Chief Police Officers under the National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme.
It is being piloted in a number of areas and will be offered to motorists in Derbyshire who are reported for offences of using a mobile phone while driving and jumping a red light.
Head of Roads Policing Chief Inspector Steve Wilson said: “A high percentage of road traffic collisions have driver error as a contributory factor. “Addressing this would have significant benefit on reducing the number of collisions on our roads.
“Re-training rather than punishing motorists will hopefully lead to an improvement in their driving.”
The course is a three-hour session led by specialist Department for Transport approved driving instructors.
