A Buxton couple celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary at the same hotel where they had their wedding reception – and even arranged for a similar menu to be served.

Greta and John Copley were joined by their family, including daughter Valerie, son-in-law Philip and granddaughter Freya, at the celebration held at the Old Hall Hotel.

The couple married on September 3 1952 at St Mary’s Church on Dale Road in Buxton. They started their married life at the New Inn Hotel, which had been run by John’s parents for many years, before later moving to their current home on Holmfield.

John worked for the Buxton Herald, as a reporter, which later merged with the Buxton Advertiser, before spending 15 years working alongside his mother at the New Inn Hotel.

He went on to work for many years for ICI at Tunstead Quarry in the laboratories for the new cement plant.

Greta, who cared for many family members over the years, returned to nursing at the Devonshire Hospital and was even awarded the accolade Nurse of the Year.

The couple have enjoyed caravan holidays and have been from one end of the country to the other.
